AM Great fun, with quirky holes and a tremendous setting.

GW VERDICT Elie boasts many very good holes, in a quaint seaside setting. There is enoughadventure and ‘quirk’ to keep the purist happy while those that seek aesthetics will also becharmed by a links that offers entertainment but also more challenge than you expect.

Why it is a high climber Elie has been in every Scottish Top 100, but this position – climbing 31 places (only Peterhead moved up more) – is comfortably its highest slot. This panel simply loved adistinctive, fun links that has a setting to match.

What we at Elie think We can only agree with the panel at Golf World!! One of the great charms of the course layout is its start within the village itself moving out to a stretch of holes running along the Firth of Forth with lovely views over the sea to Muirfield and North Berwick. But it is not just the course that should tempt visitors to a game at Elie. With outstanding service from the clubhouse staff, we are equally renowned for our hospitality off the course.

National Club Golfer Award

Elie Links Receives Prestigious Award

The links golf course at Elie has been recognised again in the UK golfing media. Our unique first hole with a blind tee shot (and Starter’s Office with distinctive sub-marine periscope) has been ranked by National Club Golfer as one of the 100 Great British Holes.

To quote National Club Golfer:

We are truly blessed in Britain with some of the best and most distinctive holes in the world. Our aim was to compile a list of excellent, diverse, geographically varied and above all memorable holes.

We hope it brings back some great memories – and gets you thinking about where you’d like to play in 2017.

This list does not attempt to identify the 100 best holes in Britain. Although there is an overlap between great courses and great holes our goal was to cast the net wider. Famous courses don’t dominate on this list.

We wanted a mixture of par 3s, 4s and 5s. And within that, we wanted long and short versions of each.

Wherever you live, or are planning to visit, you will find some inspiration.

We wanted holes that are genuinely memorable – for all the right reasons. Ones you talk about afterwards and show your friends pictures of.

…BUT FOR THE RIGHT REASONS

Did you Know?

It’s official. golf played on Elie Links since 16th Century

Thanks to research by Scottish Golf History (http://www.scottishgolfhistory.org/oldest-golf-courses/1812-elie-and-earlsferry/) it is now authenticated that when you golf on the links at Elie you are playing on one of the oldest courses in the world where golf was first played in 1589.

“Earlsferry and Elie are adjacent villages which merge into one. Though it is today referred to as the Elie course, the original course was more in Earlsferry than Elie. The first club formed was Earlsferry Golf Society which can be traced to 1787, although its existence was apparently forgotten by the time the Earlsferry and Elie Golf Club was formed in 1858.

There are reports of the game being played on ‘Earlsferry Mure’ from the 15th Century and a right to golf was included in the 1589 Burgh Charter, though the original document was lost in a fire. This is only 34 years after the similar rights mentioned in St Andrews charter and definitely suggests golf being played here as long as it has been anywhere in Scotland”.

For those who enjoy being a part of golfing history, a game on the links at Elie is a true trip into the past (Editor).

Tripadvisor Review May 2016

Repeated below is the latest review of playing over the links at Elie posted on Tripadvisor:

“Fabulous course. Lovely condition and wonderful greens.

We played it on a fairly still day which probably made it more playable. Every hole was interesting and required some thought. Got round in just over 3 hours (even with lots of 4 balls) which is how golf should be played!

Would definitely recommend. …and will certainly return.”
